But though it is also one of the most widely distributed avian species on the planet, a tendency to breed and roost in inaccessible places means that few people are familiar with its behaviour. This study introduces the 19 subspecies to be found in varying habitats and explains every aspect of their life, with photos depicting them hunting, courting and rearing their young.
